Front end freezes.... BIG STYLE!

Thu Jun 24, 2004 11:50 am

well, I managed to crash the frontend gloriously.
I just added a game with a long-ish name, added the screenshots, and music file.
All works well, when I go back into the various menus to confirm the info is correct (IE , music, add screens etc) all is fine.
When I tried to add the 3rd extra, it literally froze the frontend. I have gone back to the extras tab, and removed the 2 previous entries.
I now try to add an extra and when I click on the add new item icon, it freezes.

This is not good, no error message, and now I cannot add any extras to any game.
HELP!!!!

I have re-installed the frontend, but no difference.

ALSO.

Thu Jun 24, 2004 11:55 am

Tried reducing the name lengths of all the files relating to this last entry (Carts scans, artwork, game name etc).
no difference.
This means I cannot now ad more extras to any games I add.
I am now stuck.
:( etc.

resolved...

Thu Jun 24, 2004 1:27 pm

not only did I have to uninstall the frontend, but also remove the registry entries.
Not sure what went tits up but I think one of the dll's perhaps was not working quite as it should.
I noted that when uninstalling, a DAO component in one of the windows shared folders could be uninstalled (Is it put there by gamebase installer?).
Anyway, a FULL removal, and reinstall has fixed my very worrying situation.

Did I say thanks for writing the thing in the first place guys?

VERY unhappy.

ok, now I have to uninstall and reinstall after I have added every game.

How the heck do I get it such that I can use the frontend without it crashing (incidentally, at the exact same point every time).

Is there a ver 1.1 of the frontend due for release?

:(

OK, really annoyed now...

has anyone else experienced this sort of pattern of crash, and if so can you please help...
I really want to get the first release of my database out to you all, but this is sooooooo frustrating (I have to uninstall and reinstall quite literally every time I add a game and its extras etc).

:(:(:(

Arthur,

Please can you list in detail the exact procedure you follow to make it crash, from a fresh install onwards.

Sounds like maybe your database has become corrupted, or some registry key is wrong. PM me and I'll give you my email address to send your zipped database, and exported GB64 registry section.

I tried to PM you but I get user unknown.

Fri Jun 25, 2004 11:39 am

here is the info I tried to send you James.

in short. (after the crash)
I uninstall the gamebase (back up my data firstly, natch!)
I then open regedit and remove any mention of gamebase.

I reboot.

I then reinstall gamebase, and copy over my data files.
I then launch gamebase.
I add a new game, point it to the rom.
I add pictures. (screenshots)
I go to add extras.
I add as many for that game as needed (usually about 3 or 4)
I then add a second game, I point it to the rom file.
I add pictures.
I then open the extras tab, and click on the add extras info icon.
It then crashes.

It ONLY crashes when I click on this icon.
If I add the second game and add music, it is fine, if I try to add more extras (only extras) to a previously entered game, it also crashes.

I have reinstalled my MDAC and VB runtimes.
No joy.

I am running officeXP and while I can look at the MDB I cannot alter it, so I have not manually added any entries (perish the thought!)

tell me what you need sent to you.
thanks for the help, this is really causing me major grief.

Regards,
Arthur.

PM not working for me..

Fri Jun 25, 2004 2:24 pm

First off, I get this when I try to PM, or reply to your message
"Ran into problems sending Mail. Response: 550 5.1.1 ... User unknown

DEBUG MODE

Line : 40
File : /home/GB64/site/forum/includes/smtp.php "

now on to the answer to your question.

here are my pathing statements from the .ini file.
I have not yet tried moving the extras, as I would then have to tell the database about all the changes, and as I said I am using office XP and it complains when I open the MDB. I would have to do it all by hand.

Mon Jun 28, 2004 2:59 pm

Ran the install for the new 1.1 version.
Still got probs.
do you have a list of the Registry settings that are modified when the front end is installed, just in case I have missed one that I should have removed when uninstalling?

Regards,
Arthur.

CRACKED THE FAULT!!!!

Mon Jun 28, 2004 3:10 pm

I had a 'cheats' folder and hav ethis listed in my path info for 'extras'.
I decided to remove the cheats option, and deleted the folder, but not from the frontend.

Sometimes the frontend works and you can add extras, but when you try another time, it crashed when you click on the 'add extras' icon under the 'extras' tab.

I can prove this is what was going wrong, as I added another database (snes) and I can switch to that, click on that Icon and add extras.
I go to my NES database, try the same and it crashes.
After all this time, it was down to a directory not existing that the frontend thought should be there,
One for you James? (or whoever is updating the frontend these days at a code level.)

I have since deleted the entry in GB frontend and it works again.
:)
happy day.
