Thanks for the update.
I'm breaking it apart into seperate GBs and I am wondering what is the story with the [SMS-GG] roms? Are there games that played in both?

Google is not helping. :?

when using this rom util against several collections.
http://www.smspower.org/maxim/smschecker/
this is how it renamed the roms.

as far as i know. (and i am just guessing?)
these are roms that have been converted between SMS and Game Gear.

a good example is
The Excellent Adventures of Dizzy
this is only a prototype rom on the SMS, and has a chunk of code missing.
but the Game Gear version i had, has this missing code.
so it was fixed /converted to make a complete SMS/GG version.

or maybe they are just universal beta test ROMs for the two consoles.

Hello, I'm Maxim and I wrote SMS Checker and work on SMS and GG rom naming with Bock over at SMS Power.

The Game Gear (GG) had a backwards compatibility mode to allow it to play Master System (SMS) games via a cartridge adaptor that pulled a particular pin low to enable that mode. Certain GG games were released that also pulled this pin low; they were effectively SMS games in a GG cart. Often they were the same game released on both systems; the GG version was almost identical, usually with some tweaks to the fonts to make them more readable (the 256x192 screen being scaled down to the 160x144 LCD).

Because SMS and GG roms are pure binary ROM dumps with no metadata, emulators know whether to emulate an SMS or GG by looking at the extension. In the case of SMS mode "ports", you'd get naming clashes, so there has to be some convention to tell which is which; "[GG-SMS]" is what we came up with.

Prince of Persia.sms <- Prince of Persia for Master System
Prince of Persia [GG-SMS].sms <- Prince of Persia for Game Gear, looks identical

Some "purists" insist on renaming these to .gg and then complain that they are not emulated well as the emulator accurately simulates what would happen if the SMS mode pin wasn't pulled low. They are silly.

[Please don't delete this Bugmenot account, I didn't create it but I find them useful for driveby Beetlejuice posting.]

OK I think I get it.
So these are games that were released in a GG cartridge, but because of this pin thing that you mentioned, they must be played in SMS mode in the emulator. Right?
