Will there ever be a linux version?

Fri Apr 23, 2004 1:36 pm

I ask as recently I had the pleasure of using the cloanto Amiga emu on a pc.
Normally I would use the UAE/winfellow emulators on the windows platforms, but there is a self boot (with a light ver of linux) ver of the Amiga emu, that runs under linux.

The performance difference was immediately noticable.
Also, there was no need to configure/set up the emu as it runs from the disc.

I think a bootable disc ver of Gamebase would be very much appreciated by a lot of people.

Especially if it were the 'full' ver of the gamebase.
It would save quite a bit of HD space also.
Also, there is a new ver of Vice out...
:)

I know that would be a bit of work, but why not do a 'marillion' on this?
Pre-order the discs (IE pre-pay) to help keep the development going, and contribute toward the project.

Alternatively, a PC ver DVD with everything on it, all the games, scans, etc.
any thoughts?

From my point of view, I don't have the time to code what you're suggesting... however, GameBase has now gone open source (hint hint).

Anyway, I think if I were to take on a new coding project in the same field, it would be for a multi-emu cabinet frontend ( maybe based on a modified GEMUS ), since I'm slowly getting my MAME cab built. Maybe I could call it MameBase? ;-)

Gamebase must not be placed on the same DVD as the game images and then distributed as that would be against the licence:-

fair point about the license...

... but what if you are a collector who has been in the scene since the old school days, and has around 1000 originals in his garage?
I have tapes, discs, and carts... none of which are copies.
does that mean I could use images of software I actually own on the disc?

When GB first came to light, I actually dug out a box or two of games, for nostalgia sake, and to lok at the manuals, get the whole 'touchy feely' retro thing happening again, as while a .tap is nice to load and play it is more fun to open the cassette box and read the inlay and remember playing these games in ones childhood.

It's about distribution...what you do in your own home is obviously down to you as long as you don't give/sell/trade it with others. The game images must be kept on different media to the GBC if you want to distribute it...and you must NEVER EVER sell it obviously.
