GB20 v02 Corrections?

Sun Feb 07, 2010 3:58 pm

Hello friends,

I noticed there is not a correction thread for GB20 yet. Thanks very much, Mat, for taking the time for this project. It is much easier to actually navigate and play Vic-20 games now.

Anyway, I typed in some of these games from Compute! and RUN as a kid, so I can try to help fill in some gaps.

"Baja 1000" is from RUN issue 3, March 1984. I spent an entire weekend typing this in to get a Moon Patrol-like game that looked good in the screenshots. It was as disappointing as type-ins generally were, but this was not as bad as some.

"Serpent of Death" is from this same issue, as I tried to type this in also. I only had 8K RAM total (Super Expander) so I recall trying to cut out some things and get this to run, removing the title screen, etc. I think it was a tough type-in because all the game positioning logic worked with screen codes in print statements. :(

The screenshots made it look like Q*Bert.

While not a correction, I've also noticed that while GameBase detects WinVICE v1.22 and 2.1 on my system, some games don't run properly with 2.1 (Scrambler TAP image, for openers) but run fine with 1.22.

Cheers for that Pete, do you have programmer(s) credits to go with both of them? A lot of magazine listings are probably in GB20 already but I lack credits to know where they came from. And plenty of games still yet to be typed up...

I do need to create a thread here and on Denial to let people know to send me any information or games missing from the database. The process of heading towards v0.3 begins now, but the next release won't be for a good couple of years I imagine!

As for the Vice issue, yeah I know about it. Some of the emulation for TAPs was tightened up when the 2.x series was released and a few of the TAPs I have appear to be on the border of dodgy. Vice 1.22 was a lot more lenient to them avoiding any load issues. I've already found one game that had problems, this makes two now.

If anyone wants to clean the TAP for Scrambler (the Solar Software release) so it works okay in 2.x then go ahead :)

Sure thing. Since the magazines are now in PDF as of the last year (fantastic work there, too) I can look them up quickly.

'Baja 1000' is from Bruce S. Gordon
'Serpent of Death' is Jim C. Hoppe

Hi Mat,

I'll e-mail you a TAPclean'd version of Scrambler that works on VICE 2.1.

Would this be a matter of making a batch file to go through all of them, or does TAPclean sometimes ruin the image?

Somewhat missed answering this question before... if you want to go ahead and clean them, and make sure they all still load fine in Vice 1.22 and 2.x then please go ahead heh. Defenda was also flagged as another that doesn't like Vice 2.x recently...
